Analysis of copositive optimization based linear programming bounds on standard quadratic optimization

چکیده
The problem of minimizing a quadratic form over the unit simplex, referred to as a standard quadratic optimization problem, admits an exact reformulation as a linear optimization problem over the convex cone of completely positive matrices. This computationally intractable cone can be approximated from the inside and from the outside by two sequences of nested polyhedral cones of increasing accuracy. We investigate the sequences of upper and lower bounds on the optimal value of a standard quadratic optimization problem arising from these two hierarchies of inner and outer polyhedral approximations. We give a complete description of the structural properties of the instances on which upper and lower bounds are exact at a finite level of the hierarchy, and the instances on which upper and lower bounds converge to the optimal value only in the limit. ∗This work was supported in part by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) Grant 112M870. †Department of Industrial Engineering, Koç University, 34450 Sarıyer, Istanbul, Turkey ([email protected]) ‡Department of Industrial Engineering, Koç University, 34450 Sarıyer, Istanbul, Turkey ([email protected]). On the accuracy of uniform polyhedral approximations of the copositive cone
We consider linear optimization problems over the cone of copositive matrices. Such conic optimization problems, called copositive programs, arise from the reformulation of a wide variety of difficult optimization problems. We propose a hierarchy of increasingly better outer polyhedral approximations to the copositive cone. We establish that the sequence of approximations is exact in the limit....
متن کاملCopositivity and constrained fractional quadratic problems
We provide Completely Positive and Copositive Optimization formulations for the Constrained Fractional Quadratic Problem (CFQP) and Standard Fractional Quadratic Problem (StFQP). Based on these formulations, Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxations are derived for finding good lower bounds to these fractional programs, which can be used in a global optimization branch-and-bound approach. Appl...
متن کاملCopositive Relaxation Beats Lagrangian Dual Bounds in Quadratically and Linearly Constrained Quadratic Optimization Problems
We study non-convex quadratic minimization problems under (possibly non-convex) quadratic and linear constraints, and characterize both Lagrangian and Semi-Lagrangian dual bounds in terms of conic optimization. While the Lagrangian dual is equivalent to the SDP relaxation (which has been known for quite a while, although the presented form, incorporating explicitly linear constraints, seems to ...
متن کاملD.C. Versus Copositive Bounds for Standard QP
The standard quadratic program (QPS) is minx∈∆ xT Qx, where ∆ ⊂ <n is the simplex ∆ = {x ≥ 0 | ni=1 xi = 1}. QPS can be used to formulate combinatorial problems such as the maximum stable set problem, and also arises in global optimization algorithms for general quadratic programming when the search space is partitioned using simplices. One class of “d.c.” (for “difference between convex”) boun...
متن کاملQuadratic factorization heuristics for copositive programming
Copositive optimization problems are particular conic programs: extremize linear forms over the copositive cone subject to linear constraints. Every quadratic program with linear constraints can be formulated as a copositive program, even if some of the variables are binary. So this is an NP-hard problem class. While most methods try to approximate the copositive cone from within, we propose a ...
